November 20, 2024 at 4:50 amSo sorry to see this. I remember like it was yesterday, being a student at Pitt State and worked at the Morning Sun covering high school sports (more than 40 years ago). Coach Buche, Coach Cichon and Coach Varsalona were my very favorite basketball coaches to cover and work with. I can still see Coach Buche in that sharp burgundy sports jacket, perfectly pressed shirt, tie and slacks. There was one summer I took summer school classes in the mornings and worked at the paper in the evenings, leaving my afternoons free to take advantage of the $2 student green fees at Four Oaks. Several days that summer I ended up playing a round with Coach Buche and was just amazed at the personal interest he took in me and my development, as if I was one of his own students. Such a gentleman – but also in every respect a “regular guy” that was a blast to be around. Would’ve loved to have talked to him another time. God bless him and those that loved him.
